The Harris-Wiener Family Fund was established in 1998, by Charter Oak State College President Dr. Merle W. Harris and her husband David to assist needy women who wanted to continue their education, particularly women wishing to pursue careers in education, social service, or public service. The parents of both David and Merle Harris believed that education was the key to success. Both families also stressed the importance of serving others. These family values are reflected in the criteria for this scholarship.
This scholarship is open to women who are employed and still have demonstrated financial need and who show academic promise. Preference for awarding will be given to individuals who are employed in or planning a career in:
- Education
- Early Care and Education
- Government
- Non-profit Organizations
The average bi-annual award is $600.
I began this fall semester knowing that only 5 college courses stood between me and a Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in Behavioral Science/Child Study. My strong desire to succeed in a career serving young children gives me the motivation I need to balance work, school and single parenting; my only barrier has been financial. When our former College President, Dr. Merle W. Harris and her husband David honored me with the Harris-Wiener Scholarship, that barrier was removed for me. Thanks to their generosity, I’ll be able to graduate in time and provide a better life for my son as I begin my career working in an Early Education setting.
